Urgent Action on Housing

Please see my latest Press Release

Councillor Clement Chunga is calling for urgent action to support people in Northampton who need  family housing.

Cllr. Chunga [Labour, Brookside] says, “ There is a housing crisis in Northampton. We need more social housing. We need more affordable housing and better quality temporary and emergency housing. How do I know?

I am the Councillor for Brookside ward and I have many cases of people coming to me with housing issues. In fact I am inundated. Many of my residents are living in overcrowded conditions.  Some are in social housing, some are in private accommodation. One urgent case I am dealing with is where there are two sisters with three children living in a one bedroom flat.  They have to use the living room as a bedroom. They have no cooking facilities. This is unacceptable.

Another case concerns a family with 6 children living in temporary accommodation because they are homeless. They have been placed in Bed and Breakfast in Wellingborough but the children go to school in Northampton. This has placed the mother under such stress that she is getting very ill.  The temporary accommodation is very expensive, £2500 plus for a month with no breakfast with additional utility costs.

In addition this particular property is badly maintained and full of mould and smells of smoke from recreational drugs”.
