The ward Councillors for Spring Boroughs are fully behind the residents in their demand that the local shop presently part of Little Cross Street is kept when Little Cross Street is redeveloped.
This is a really important amenity in the area that is used by residents within a 100 metre area. If the shop wasn’t there residents would have to go into town. For the elderly frail and for parents with young children this is not always an option.
Local shops do more that sell goods. They act as community hub. They are a meeting point. They do home deliveries. They raise the alarm of a regular doesn’t show for a few days.
The shop on the corner of Little Cross Street has been there for 18 years. It is part of the fabric of the neighbourhood.
Shop keeper Jaya Patel said:
“I am being threatened with eviction after 18 years of working in this community. We were promised that the shop would be retained as part of the new development. All I am asking is for that promise to be made good.”
Cllr Danielle Stone said:
“ Everyone on this estate, the Residents Association, the Neighbourhood Forum and the Councillors all agree that we must have a shop on this part of the estate. It is a life line for many people who cannot get into town. It is a Community hub and we need it. All the locals are very angry that they have not been consulted about it. I know they would like the opportunity to have their say.”
