Northampton labour Group hosted a Seminar on Housing

with John Healey MP, Shadow Minister of State for Housing


In a listening exercise before John Healey MP spoke participants were asked what their priority for housing policy was:-


Fix the broken planning legislation

Build more council housing

Tackling homelessness

End the right to buy

Address the decent homes needs of the New Towns

Regulate the leasing market

Regulate the private sector

Affordable rents in the private sector

Legally applied basic rights in housing

Tougher regulation of HIMOs

Strategy for supporting the development of Gypsy and Traveller sites

Repurpose empty buildings

Make it illegal for landlords and their agents to overcharge

Scrap viability assessments for 106 developments

More night shelters and women refuges

Local authorities to have more power to build social housing

Young people to be given more support with housing

Overcrowding needs to be redefined

End social overcrowding

Need a Living rates rent cap

Speed up the rate of house building - unlock land

Build for a range of need

Build for the disabled, build bungalows that are fully accessible

Enable the under 25’s to find somewhere to live independently

More housing for older people.
