At the last full council meeting the Labour group dealt with housing in the Borough. We made the point that we have an acute housing crisis. This is being made worse because we are a growing town with growing needs. We use to have over 22,000 units of council housing. Because of the Right to Buy we now have less than 11,000. The Housing and Planning Bill currently going through Parliament will make the situation even worse. For new builds the government is encouraging developers to build for home ownership at lower standards. Labour believes we need a mix of housing. We need social housing and private housing for rent, housing for shared ownership and affordable homes for first time buyers.  All new builds should be built to high standards and should be energy efficient.

We need to tackle the unregulated private sector and rogue landlords. We need to restrict the number of family homes being turned into Houses in Multiple Occupation. Please help us camapign for more and better homes. Contact our office for our pamphlet on housing and our questionnaire.
