Empowering our communities

Four years ago Neighbourhood Co-ordinations were ruthlessly cut from the budget by the Mackintosh administration and Labour warned this would disadvantage many communities. Communities like Semilong benefitted from their work in getting additional funding and brought various community groups together to map a way forward. Neighbourhood Committees, supported by the Neighbourhood Coordinator, did great work in deprived areas. Neighbourhood committees and coordinators help to level the playing field with those areas that have Parish Councils.    I saw the good work they did in Semilong before it was axed.

It is our long-term aspiration to see a return of Neighbourhood Co-ordinators sometime in future when the finances of this Borough Council allow. We would start with a Neighbourhood coordinator for the Eastern District as that faces immediate problems and needs urgent attention. However, we would then gradually introduce them into other areas of the town like Semilong.
