A workshop was held yesterday for County Councillors. We looked at how Councillors can be effective in the New Generation model for delivering services for the County. Labour opposed the New Generation model but now it has been agreed by the conservative majority council we need to get the best we can for our constituents. We argued for a dedicated Cllr. helpline so that our case work can be recorded and dealt with efficiently. If casework is properly recorded it also gives us the evidence we need for prioritising the budget. We looked at our role in the commissioning process and how we can and must hold officers to account. We also discussed how we can influence the design and shape of services. An example we gave was for social prescription and social brokerage to be part of the deal. This is a methodology used in other LAs. It seeks to view people holistically and to address social as well as medical and care needs. It recognises that information giving is not enough. There is a need for brokerage- a method of getting things done.
We have previously argued for a strategy of co-designing and co-delivery of services in partnership with relevant voluntary and statutory agencies.
