Its official. The County Council is not providing value for money. The external auditors have to sign off the accounts to say 1. they are accurate. 2. that they provide value for money. The external auditors have certified the first but not the second. This is extremely worrying. The County Labour group have been arguing that the New Generation model which is the County setting up companies to run services is an expensive thing to do. It means managment is duplicated. We need managers at the County and managers running the companies. There are also far too many interim staff and consultants employed at the County. This is a very expensive way of resourcing services and does not ensure quality. There are two members of staff being paid more than £200,000 a year! The gap between the highest and the lowest paid has grown.
In addition staff have to put up with not getting any sick pay for the first three days of illness. This is guaranteed to effect staff morale and productivity. In the mean time the County is completing a £56 million pound project building offices in the town.
The Borough group of Labour Councillors has long argued for Unitary status for Northampton. Give us the budget. Give us the statutory powers. We could make a better job of it.
