Change policy on overcrowding

Please see my speech to full council

Thank You Mayor,

The issue of overcrowding is a big issue in many homes across our town.

What people class as overcrowded and what the Council class as overcrowded can be very different.  Overcrowding is a serious problem in some households in our town. Living in overcrowded houses can have a detrimental impact on personal welfare and a child’s education.

I believe the statutory definition of overcrowding is too low and so we need much stronger local criteria. I want the Borough Council to do what it can to help alleviate overcrowding in homes by going beyond the legal duties and definitions. We are asking the Council to fundamentally review the Allocations Policy to ensure residents are not living in overcrowded conditions in future.
