At the Houses of Commons

Monday 7 March at the House of Commons with the Women's Forum.

Our  tour of Parliament was terrific. We had a discussion about equality with David Mackintosh and another MP for Bury St Edmunds. I did not accept it quietly when David Mackintosh said women only short lists produce weak candidates. I protested loudly how wrong this was. We live in an unequal society. We need regulations just like we had with drink driving, driving seat belts and even fox hunting (that DM voted against). Enforcement of law is needed as self- regulation isn’t sufficient. Both MPs said women in power should promote women candidates and I agreed but said Maggie T obviously didn't! MP for Bury said she was could work fewer hours when requested because she had children and I said maybe people liberation is the way as men too love their children and request more family time. They said that boys and girls are brought up equal in society now and I reminded them of the sexualisation of girls clothes, zero size models, and people were so pushed with zero hour contracts and keeping a roof over their heads that this often was not given priority. I said also traditional roles for men and women, black and white, were easier perhaps to follow because of school achievement targets e.g caring or athletics rather than breaching traditional barriers.
